Artist You Should Know: An Interview with Silent Forum
Back in August I did a little article on a song called “How I Faked the Moon Landing” by an outfit from Cardiff named Silent Forum on Libertino Records. What you may not know is exactly how many times I’ve listened to that song over the course of the second half of 2018. The answer, in short, is A LOT. In fact, I’m going on record as saying it’s my favorite single of the year, thus making Silent Forum a very hot commodity indeed. With another new single teasing a full length record in 2019, this is a band you need to etch into your “Need To Know” file immediately. Don’t just take my word for it….hit play on the embed below. I seriously can’t get enough of it!
Once I found out the band had a new single coming out this week I just HAD to get them on the site to talk about their new music, the new album, and shout it all from the rooftops. The new single is titled “Robot,” and it fuses everything that I love about post-punk alternative music with everything that I love about new wave. Just like “How I Faked the Moon Landing,” this new track could have been cut from the discography of a number of who’s who hall of fame artists from the golden age of post punk and new wave. Instead, Silent Forum have captured magic in a bottle with music created in the right here, and right now. It’s uncanny how well they capture these sounds, blurring the lines of reality, while managing to also write something that sound so fresh, engaging, and relevant to today’s music scene. Color me VERY impressed.
What better way to find out more about this amazing act than from their own mouths. I had the opportunity to talk to them last week and I hope you enjoy the interview!
First of all, thanks so much for talking to me! I'm a big fan and I'm thrilled to have you on the site! How are things?
Thank you! Things are going very well at the moment. We are currenting putting the finishing touches some new tracks, which are sounding great. Charlie (our producer) is also working away at a single edit of our next single which is a little more “out there”.
"How I Faked the Moon Landing" has to be my favorite single of 2018. How did that song come about?
‘How I Faked The Moon Landing’ was our original band name back when we were a fun indie pop act. As this song marked a break in our previously moody post-punk sound towards something brighter and lighter we thought we’d name it after our younger selves. As for how the song itself came about, we had a surprisingly negative conversation with someone from the music industry who said we came across a little bit “too seriously”, so the whole song is pretty much poking fun at them. Lyrics like “we’re destined to be a local band not on the local radio” spring to mind. That song was played by the BBC 12 times in the weeks after release, which we were really proud of.
Speaking of singles, you've got a new track called "Robot" releasing December 7th! What direction is that song going to take us?
It struck me that there are very few songs about stressed out office workers, even though its a state that a huge number of people find themselves in. We quite like the tension between the character being portrayed in the vocals and the frantic dance-punk melodies - it’s quite an unlikely pairing.
Are there plans for a full length album any time soon?
Yes, we are releasing our debut album early next year. There will be a further two singles which will be quite different from what we’ve released so far. I think the album as a whole has a rich variety, whilst at the same time sounding cohesive. We are currently going through the difficult stage of deciding what should and should not make the LP, but we are all very pleased with how it’s shaping up.
What are the beginnings of Silent Forum, your "Behind the Music" story, so to speak?
We all met through the power of the internet and have since become best friends. We used to practice in our ex-guitarist’s Mum’s barn which was kitted out with a drum kit and some amps. Our music was all over the place but it was incredible fun. Losing another member last year and being whittled down to a four piece made us redouble our efforts in terms of redefining our sound, moulding it into something positive, intense and exciting. Dario in particular (as the now sole guitarist) had to completely change the way he played to fill the space left behind.
