Analogue Electronic Whatever / Since Year Dot
What do you get when you mix old school analogue synth sounds, drum machines, and vocoder vocals? You get a mighty fresh throwback sound that cuts through all cookie cutter synths out there. If you’re a fan of all those classic Mute and Factory Records artists then I’ve got your new favorite band…Analogue Electronic Whatever. This UK based synthpop outfit just released a new album, and I’m here to tell you, Since Year Dot is a record you need in your life.
This kind of music is right in my wheelhouse. I absolutely LOVE the roots of synthpop, and while many modern bands attempt to show their “street cred” with retro album covers and neon soaked aesthetics, NOTHING says 80’s like analogue synths. Analogue Electronic Whatever have tapped into the real sound of the late 70’s and early 80’s in a way that few acts have been able to and the results are simply mind-blowing. You’d be hard pressed to believe some of these tracks weren’t actually from that era if you didn’t already know that they just got released in 2018.
But wait! You can’t judge this book completely based on the musical cover I’ve just handed you. Since Year Dot is an album that not only embraces the past but it also takes that retro sound and fuses it with multiple styles of music to create something truly unique. Whether it be hip hop, pop, post punk, new wave, or traditional synthpop, Analogue Electronic Whatever never completely show their hand. The end result is an album that continues to surprise from start to finish.
It goes without saying that I’m very much impressed with Since Year Dot. It’s a whole lot of fun, contains some of the tightest hooks this side of Kraftwerk, and should soothe even the most jaded synthpop soul. What’s better is that it’s available on multiple formats, from digital to cassette to compact disc!
